The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched an inquiry after an unexpected sonar anomaly was reported off the coast of North Carolina. The NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer was dispatched to the region on Wednesday to assess if the anomaly was caused by a suspected shipwreck or a rock formation.

NOAA has now blocked the area where the researchers detected the abnormality. According to NOAA on Wednesday evening, the spotted anomaly, now known as the ‘Big Dipper Anomaly,’ appeared to be geologic in nature.
